Our DPS Weekly: Hark! It Is the Shakespeare Festival…Gone Virtual!
One of DPS' most spectacularly literary and theatrical events is our annual Shakespeare Festival, which we host each spring and is one of the biggest student-led Bard-fests in the country. This year’s festival needed to be canceled due to the health restrictions in place in our community. But our students let the Shakespearean words and spirit play on. Please enjoy a few of these student videos below, and watch the complete line up here , from DPS students who rose up to be masters of their fate
Our DPS Weekly: Staying Connected While We Stay Apart
As we all continue to follow health guidelines, keeping ourselves and each other safe remains our number one priority. But even as we keep our distance, the DPS community is finding more ways than ever to stay connected while we stay apart. Anyone in Far Northeast Denver this morning will agree, as staff members from rolled through town to honor graduating seniors -- one boisterous beep, honk and holler at a time. The school community organized a Senior Caravan Celebration, and in a long (and lo
Integrating Care to Help Under-served Children - Issuu
The Commerce City Community Campus (C4) anchors health and social services in one location. Kids in Need of Dentistry (KIND) has joined trusted health and public service providers here to increase access to integrated care, while empowering families with choices that will decrease healthcare costs and increase quality of life.
I wish something like the C4 would have been around when I was taking care of my little brother Alexander.

Open Up Eriana!
Eriana has come so far! In 2019, she came to see KIND for her first trip to the dentist. She was only 1 1/2 and had an extremely hard time — she was screaming, crying and fighting clinic staff due to her fear.
Eriana has a genetic medical condition and had seen many different doctors in her short little life. Eriana was so nervous

The KIND 7: A Case Study in Equity - Issuu
Persistent inequities continue to exist with relation to oral disease numbers locally, nationally and globally. The dental community sits in a distinct position to actively engage in promoting oral health equity, both for their own patients and the wider community. Kids in Need of Dentistry (KIND) and Dr. Kevin Patterson, DDS, MD were on the front lines of this effort recently as Colorado State University Professor, Dr. Eric Ishiwata, reached out to KIND looking for help for immigrant, “DREAMer”
Our Hearts Were Breaking for Laila
Dr. Lisa’s Hope Pediatric Dentistry in Westminster gets its name from a traumatic experience Dr. Lisa navigated previously in 2014. Dr. Lisa’s husband, Cody had contracted a virus back then that was very similar to COVID-19. It attacked his immune system and saw him struggling in the hospital for 21 days. Eventually, his organs went back to normal size, but a very pregnant and very terrified Lisa said, “he’d comment that as soon as he saw me and my smile in the hospital, he would have hope.” Wit
Andean Cat Proposal
In the Peruvian Andes you'll find the Lake Sibinacocha Watershed, a fragile place researchers say is suffering from the effects of pollution, climate change and ecotourism. Denver Zoo Researcher Preston Sowell has been working on ways to preserve
this land. Demonstrating the Andean cat is present in the watershed could play a key role in those efforts. That’s why he reached out to
Denver Zoo in 2017 for help documenting the cat’s presence - something that had never been done before.

A Force of Nature Gala
The Denver Zoo at twilight was the one-of-a-kind backdrop for the Zoo’s inaugural A Force of Nature Gala on September 12. A smashing success, 500 friends of the Zoo honored longtime supporters Eddie and Susan Robinson for their decades of support and leadership. The keynote address belonged to famed National Geographic photographer and Photo Ark founder, Joel Sartore. Sartore gave both a funny and sobering talk about the need to act now before entire species of wild animals become extinct.

Helping the Tiniest Among Us
Denver Zoo Ventures Into Rocky Mountain National Park as the Front Range Pika Project Expands
One of the cutest critters in Colorado could be in trouble. The American pika, a relative of the rabbit with a tiny tail and iconic “eep” call, may be vulnerable to changes in climate in their alpine homes. Pika rely on the snowpack and cool temperatures their high-elevation habitats offer. As the snowpack melts earlier each year, and summer temperatures rise, biologists are concerned that pikas may be

Flocking to Help
Denver Zoo Has Joined an International Effort to Rescue and Rehabilitate More Than 1,800 Flamingo Chicks and Unhatched Eggs
It should have been a cause for celebration. In January, thousands of lesser flamingo eggs were waiting to hatch at Kamfers Dam in Kimberley, South Africa. For a near-threatened species, thousands of chicks would be a boon for the species. But when severe drought hit the area, the adult flamingos were forced to leave in search of food and water, leaving nearly 1,800 chicks

Tensing's Pregnant!
Our 11-Year-Old Greater One-Horned Rhino is Expecting a Calf in Spring 2020
Earlier today, we celebrated World Rhino Day with some exciting news that we’ve been very anxious to share for a long time: Tensing, our 11-year-old greater one-horned rhino, is pregnant! Rhinos have one of the longest gestation periods of all mammals at an average of 470-480 days, so, while Tensing conceived in November 2018, her due date isn’t until spring 2020. Any animal pregnancy is cause for celebration, but this
